EcoTab does not collect, transmit, or sell any personal data.
It makes no network requests of any kind. Everything it reads stays on
your device.
What the extension accesses
To do its job — estimating what each open tab costs in memory and energy —
EcoTab reads information about your open tabs through the browser's
extension APIs:
Tab titles and URLs. Used to label each row in the tab
list so you can tell your tabs apart, and to apply a per-site memory
adjustment for known resource-heavy web apps.
Tab state. Whether a tab is active, pinned, playing
audio, or already suspended. This drives the energy estimate and the
safety rules that stop the extension suspending something you're using.
Tab activity times. When each tab was last used, so the
extension knows which tabs have gone idle.
Total system memory usage. On Chrome only, shown in the
popup footer as a measured reference point. Read-only.
Because this includes page URLs and titles, it falls under the Chrome Web
Store's "web history" category and is disclosed as such — even though the
information is only ever processed locally, on your own machine, to render
the extension's own interface. EcoTab does not build a browsing history,
does not record the pages you visit over time, and does not read the
content of any page. It has no content scripts, so it cannot see the text,
images, or form data on the sites you visit.
What is stored
Your settings — idle threshold, device type, grid carbon
intensity, and which protections are enabled — stored locally using the
browser's extension storage.
Your cumulative CO₂-saved total and the count of tabs
suspended, stored locally, used to display your progress.
Per-tab activity timestamps, held in session storage and
automatically cleared when the browser closes. These are never written
to disk.
Tab titles and URLs are never saved. They are read, displayed, and discarded.
What is never done
No network requests — the extension never contacts any server, including ours.
No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or tracking of any kind.
No accounts, logins, or identifiers.
No advertising, and no profiling or ad targeting.
No third-party services, SDKs, or libraries that could receive data.
No selling or sharing of data with anyone, for any purpose.
Permissions and why they exist
tabs — to list your tabs, read their state for the estimates, and suspend or restore them.
storage — to save your settings and your saved-CO₂ total on your device.
alarms — to run one check per minute for idle tabs.
system.memory — to display total system memory usage (Chrome only).
Your control
Automatic suspension can be turned off entirely in the extension's settings,
and individual tabs can be protected from it. Your saved statistics can be
reset at any time from the dashboard. Uninstalling the extension permanently
deletes everything it has stored.
Children
EcoTab is a general-purpose utility, is not directed at children, and
collects no personal information from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this same
address with a new "last updated" date. Any change that would expand what
the extension accesses will be reflected here before it ships.
